The Birkenhead Licensing Trust was established in 1967 to operate on and off licences for the sale of alcohol in the old Birkenhead Borough Council area.
The net proceeds from the Lion Foundation gaming machines located in the Good Home Birkenhead, the Inn Field Glenfield, and the Wairau Sports Bar are distributed each year via the Lion Foundation to community groups in the Trust’s local area. In 2023 the Trust distributed close to $1,800,000 of net proceeds to groups in the Birkdale, Beachhaven, Birkenhead, Glenfield and Northcote.
The Trust has six elected trustees (currently five). The trustees are elected at the same time as the Auckland Council local body elections. The trustee’s role is to oversee the businesses and to consider and approve net proceed grants to local community groups.
